There are a lot more hungry families in Cary and vicinity than you may think, and the numbers are climbing. In June, 31,090 households in Wake County received Food & Nutrition Services (FNS) benefits, with 68,116 individuals receiving benefits that month, according to the North Carolina Division of Social Services. Also in June, 2,737 new applications were submitted for FNS benefits.

Cary, NC – Spotted another community garden in my travels around Cary. This one’s at the front of the parking lot by Whole Foods in Waverly Place. All the food is donated to the Inter-Faith Shuttle. They even donate extra produce you might have in your own garden.

The mini-pear tomatoes were fun and tasty. The blueberries were plump and ripe and ready to eat at 2 cartons for $5. It’s been a good season for peppers. Cantaloupes were heavy and sweet. And then there were the watermelons. Field-ripened and massive as artillery shells.

I made my first home brew from a Mr. Beer kit my wife bought me for Christmas 5 or 6 years ago. I looked at the box and said,”What? YOU CAN DO THAT?” Admittedly I made and bottled about 6 different beers all in the span of 6 weeks and began to read everything I could get my hands on.

Cary, NC – It’s not news that the weather is brutal, scorching, baking like an oven and hot like a furnace. But one can only watch so many NetFlix movies. The park is nice; a pool is better. But another way to beat the hot July heat is to go out for an ice cream, gelato or frozen custard.
