Concessions for the Chinese Film Series at the Galaxy included dumplings and Chinese beer.
Cary, NC- Where can you get steamed dumplings and a bottle of Yanjing at the movies? The answer: Right here in Cary at the Galaxy Cinema and their Chinese Film Series. The first night was Thursday, June 24.
The Galaxy, and specifically Andrew Johnson, did a splendid job of organizing and hosting this film opening last week.
The lobby of the Galaxy Theater is such a great place to hang out while you wait for friends. I had heard that The Grand Asian Market was furnishing special concessions for this series. I was not disappointed by the tender steamed dumplings I ordered before the film, and at $4 they were a bargain. I decided to have the new Chinese beer, Yanjing, to wash them down.
Thus sated, I headed in to the movie “In the Mood For Love”. One of the things I enjoy about a film series is the lecture before the movie starts. Andrew told us about this movie, filmed in 2004, and set in Hong Kong during the 1960′s. He stated that the director, Wong Kar-Wai, filmed for 15 months and did not use a script but instead had his actors improvise their scenes. This film is regarded by many to be one of the best Chinese films of the past decade.
The series was produced with help from N.C. State’s Confucius Institute. This department promotes Chinese culture and language with classes on everything from language to cooking. Dr. Bailian Li, (Director of the Confucius Institute, and the Vice Provost of International Affairs at NCSU) spoke briefly about what the Institute does at NC State.
The movie, “In the Mood For Love”, was a love story that swept me away in the lives of the man and woman protagonists Mr. Chow and Mrs. Chan, played by Tony Leung and Maggie Chung. They are two people married to spouses that are often away traveling. Their story does not end with a traditional happy ending, but I spent the movie hoping for one.
Next Film in the Series
I thoroughly enjoyed being immersed in another culture and time for the evening and I look forward to the next film Riding Alone For Thousands of Miles being shown on Thursday, July 8 at 7:30 p.m.
