CARY, NC – Following a national search that yielded 36 candidates from as far away as New York, Oregon, California, and Texas, Scott Hecht has been chosen as the Town of Cary’s newest Public Works Director. He will oversee more than 300 staff in such diverse areas as solid waste collection, water and sewer system maintenance, traffic signal operations, facility and park maintenance, and fleet services.
Hecht, 47, has been serving as the Town of Cary’s Solid Waste Division Manager within the Town’s combined Public Works and Utilities Department since July 1, 2001; prior to that and for more than a decade, Hecht was a General Manager for Waste Management, Inc. He replaces Mike Bajorek, who was promoted to Assistant Town Manager in July.
“Scott has a great record of supporting and demonstrating the Town’s values, including a strong commitment to excellent customer service, and we’re pleased to be able to move him into this new role,” said Public Works and Utilities Director Steve Brown.
“Cary has one of the best public works operations in the nation, and I’m looking forward to working with such a talented group of people to continue providing the services that our citizens so rightly deserve,” said Hecht. “This is a tremendous opportunity, and I appreciate the Town’s confidence in me.”
A Certified Public Accountant, Scott Hecht holds a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from the University of South Carolina. His professional associations include the American Public Works Association, the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and the Solid Waste Association of North America.
Outside of work, Hecht enjoys cycling, snow skiing, and spending time with his family. He and his wife, Susan, have two children, Sarah and Elllis, and live in Cary with their Australian Shepherd, Krypto.
